Posted by Robyn Nietert, WMI president: My 2018 field visit to WMI’s East African loan hubs has been full of celebrations as we opened not one but two new rural loan program pavilions in Eastern Uganda. The pavilions bring financial services closer to home for the thousands of village women who utilize WMI’s facilities. Children always turn out for the singing and dancing and parade through the village center – then enjoy the massive dinner as a reward for sitting through all the speeches. The building dedications brought out many local officials (typically men!) who congratulated the businesswomen on their hard work – but a notable woman speaker was the Honorable Minster of Microfinance for Uganda, dressed smartly in her pink gown to greet the WMI ladies! The new WMI van with the loan program logo is recognized by women throughout the villages and they frequently stop to greet Olive Wolimbwa, WMI’s Local Director, as she travels about to conduct trainings, visit businesses and monitor loan issuances and collections.
